Together we explore mindfulness and awareness for cultivating an open heart in our everyday lives.

We are a diverse, multicultural community, committed to social justice and to maintaining a Sangha that's welcoming to people of all races, ethnicities, classes, genders, abilities, sizes and ages.

We welcome people at all levels of practice. Simple beginning meditation instructions are always offered. If you have specific questions about meditation, a teacher is usually available to answer questions.

from the website:

"Founded in a celebration of diversity, the East Bay Meditation Center welcomes everyone seeking to end suffering and cultivate happiness. Our mission is to foster liberation, personal and interpersonal healing, social action, and inclusive community building. We offer mindfulness practices and teachings on wisdom and compassion from Buddhist and other spiritual traditions. Rooted in our commitment to diversity, we operate with transparent democratic governance, generosity-based economics, and environmental sustainability.

THE PRACTICE OF DANA (GENEROSITY):

Consistent with the mission of the East Bay Meditation Center (EBMC), all EBMC classes are being offered without a fee. However, we ask that you consider providing a donation to the teacher and to the EBMC to allow us to continue to offer classes like these to the diverse population of the East Bay. This is known as the practice of Dana, which is how wisdom teachings have been provided in Asia for centuries. It allows exposure to valuable lessons independent of class and economic status.

Out of respect for people with environmental illnesses, please do not wear fragrance or scented products at EBMC events."

"We meet most Mondays 7:30-9 pm to practice silent sitting meditation, yogic song, and for introductory teachings on Buddhism. We celebrate Tsog on the last Monday of each month, which usually ends closer to 10pm. Please check this schedule to confirm practice dates; please email for directions."

"Aro is a Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist tradition whose unusual characteristics make it singularly appropriate for many Westerners. Aro is principally concerned with transforming our experience of everyday being, rather than achieving an esoteric or spiritualised mode of existence. Our aim is to engender cheerful courage, perceptive consideration, sincere determination, natural gallantry, graciousness, creativity, and spaciousness.

The Aro teachings descend from a lineage of enlightened women – beginning with Yeshé Tsogyel. She was the female Tantric Buddha, who—together with Padmasambhava—founded the Nyingma tradition of Buddhism. Aro is a small family lineage within that tradition – founded by the female visionary Lama Aro Lingma in 1909."

Vipassana Santa Cruz is a community of people who support each other's meditation practice and the application of the Dhamma (Dharma) in our daily lives. Our goal is to reduce the suffering caused by greed, hatred, and delusion; to do this, we cultivate wisdom and compassion. Our vision of community includes formal practice, attention to ethics, and integration of practice through service, study, and discussion. The core of our community is Insight Meditation (Vipassana), one of the central meditation teachings of the Buddha, practiced and passed on within the Theravadin tradition for over 2,500 years.

Monday Nights 5:30 pm - 6:30pm

We have been meeting since July 2002. We explore mindfulness, meditation, and spiritual practice in our day to day lives and focus on cultivating an open awareness spacious enough to include whatever arises moment to moment. It is a wonderful way to bring closure to your activities of the day.

Format:
meditation 30 min
topic discussion, dharma talk, or guest speaker 20-25 min
short sitting 3-5 min

There is no cost of the group, and the group sustains itself through voluntary donations which in the Buddhist tradition is called the practice of "dana" or generosity (the rent is $45 per week). It is a drop-in group, so please join us in supporting and deepening our collective mindfulness practice.

If you are new to meditation, you are welcomed to approach one of us for guidance and instructions to begin a meditation practice.

from their web site:

"We gather on Wednesdays, and welcome others ... the merely curious, the earnest beginner, the dedicated practitioner ... to join us. We generally begin with 30 minutes of silent meditation with enough guidance to introduce visitors to the basics. Afterwards we hear a dhamma talk from a visiting teacher (most, but not all of whom, are primarily grounded in the Theravada tradition of Buddhist practice). There is usually time for Q&A at the end of the evening, or for another short sitting. There is no charge for the teachings, but we welcome donations to support the teachers and our hosts at the hostel."
