The Diamond Way Buddhist Center San Francisco belongs to the Karma Kagyu Lineage, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. This lineage transmits the teachings of Diamond Way (Vajrayana) Buddhism. The Diamond Way is the crown jewel of the Buddha's teachings, it employs methods of total identification with enlightenment for quickest results.

The Diamond Way Buddhist Center San Francisco is one of a worldwide network of Buddhist Centers, founded by Lama Ole Nydahl according to the wishes of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. They are now under the spiritual guidance of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje. They developed through a grassroots movement of lay people and most of the centers consists of people and families living together, working full-time jobs and incorporating Diamond Way teachings and meditation into their daily lives. Members share responsibility for guiding meditations, in answering questions and giving explanations about Buddhism; their work is unpaid and based on idealism and friendship.
